Controls are the nervous system of a building. Sensors are the eyes and ears. Controllers are the local brain. Actuators, valves, dampers, VFDs, relays, and starters are the muscles. Networks are the nerves. The BMS or headend is the operator window. Alarms, trends, and graphics are how the system explains itself.

A controls system does not make the building comfortable by magic. It measures what is happening, compares that condition to what should be happening, makes a decision, sends a command, verifies the response, and records the result. When any one of those steps is wrong, the building becomes hard to operate.
